Second night of two, it was supposed to be three, but the benefit we were gonna play the next night got canceled. Long story involving some deceit and a weed deal that never ended up happening for the benificiary...  Yup.

We were second of three at the Lost Well, the boys for Alaska were first and Cunto! finished the night off.

The place was pretty crowded for our slot. Loads for those Cunto fans love us. And they are a rowdy bunch! At some point Smitty was on the ground, missing his shirt and some gal was grinding on him. Boom.

We finished it off with a bunch of covers.  I had to beg to play “China Grove” instead of “Take It Easy”. Believe it or not it’s the lesser of two evils.

9/10/16

Hickoids went up to Ft Worth last week. Our set was good and the opener, Duel, kicked some twin lead ass. But I don't wanna talk that. This post is all about the Me-Thinks.


It was their record release and they asked us to come up and play. Those dudes are great people and the music is top notch, we couldn't say no!



We finish our set and swap the gear, the "thinks" load in their amps, drums, smoke machines and a bar! A bar! On to the stage!! Then they stared the set. Nothing but covers. For their record release party! Guts! They played the first two tunes from that Cheap Trick Live album. Two Spinal Tap songs. TWO! Replacements and Beaumonts (and many, many others.)



There was a raffle where seventeen of the twenty-odd spaces on the wheel were labeled "cold taco". I saw a few folks eating cold tacos at various points. No euphemism here.


Somewhere in the set they all left the stage and a guy dressed as Peter Criss came up and played a drum solo, then sang Beth to a backing track. Fuck me it was funny.



Later on, I don't remember what song it was but when it got around to the lead, Ray took off his guitar and handed it to one of the dudes from Duel. He plays the solo, Ray sits at the stage bar, orders a beer and has a couple of swigs (they let the solo go on and on!) then they swapped back. The ass-kicking continued.


I spent a lot of time up at the stage at the bar. I was getting pretty lit up in the best possible way. With that easy access to beer and shots it was impossible not to... Then they played "I Like Drinking" by the Beaumonts. The place went nuts and the smoke machines went on. Lance was standing next to me (we were still mostly behind the drums) so I lit up a joint. Passed it around and the good people in the stage bar had an extra good time.


Eventually they finished up with what they were planning on playing and they were gonna call it a night. But there were too many people yelling that they played both songs from the single. I mean it was the release party... Speaking of which I totally spaced on getting a copy... Idiot.



Thanks fellas, that was one hell of a night! Pure Rock and Roll.

Damn! I totally forgot about this one...

The Ladies and I drove down to SA to play at one of the best clubs, the Mix on one of the worst nights of the week, Sunday. A 10PM start time almost guarantees light attendance unless you are a big road band. We are not... But the turnout was surprisingly good. A number of friends made it out to support our foolishness. 

We tried out a "new" cover, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". I jumped on bass while BC played her French Horn. No joke. The general concept of a stripped down "Papa" has been floating around in my head for years. I'm happy we finally made it a reality. We busted our asses getting it right in rehearsal and we did a nice job of it at the show, but when we finished... Silence... Ouch. It's not dead, but that hurt.

Western Star finished up the night. All of the Ladies had already taken off but I stuck around to watch them whip it. The Mix is a really great club for rockin. And they did.

Short drive home and I was in bed by 4. Not bad.

Hickoids made the drive to Bend to play at Bob's again. He was having a festival at the store/bar and we were giving them three hours of musical love. Smitty brought a bass amp so all I needed was my instrument and some cords, It's a semi-backline!

We jumped in to Freak 3 (she just had her one year anniversary!) and made decent time on the drive. The weather was amazing, the cold rain that had been hitting Austin dried up, the sun came out and it was in the mid 60's. Everyone was happy about that. The freak got unloaded and we started in on our first set. It had a nice, leisurely pace and the crowd was small, but appreciative. At the end Bob, was gonna jump up and play some with us, but Tom's rig started giving him problems so we stopped for a bit.

After the break we hopped up and did a few and THEN Bob got up to help. The second set ended (without amp failure) and we pretty much did the same thing again for the third set but we played different songs. I can't remember the order, but we did a couple of Hickoid songs then some covers like Gloria, Wild Thing and Knockin on Heavens Door. The Hicks (with Bob) were a classic rock band for one glorious Sunday afternoon in Bend TX.
