4/13/19

Had a last minute show the other night, Hickoids at the Texas Music Ranch. It’s a place way east Austin and there was a local band fest going on, we were second to last and it was cold as hell outside, where we were playing.

There were about a dozen people there to watch the show... that is the unfortunate reality when it’s 45 degrees out and it was 80 the day before. Don’t know how they paid for this. Not really my problem. Mine was freezing fingers.

We got there and Amplified Heat was on. That’s a name I’ve seen for years and somehow I’ve never seen them play. Those dudes were great! Really impressive stuff.  And they have a shitton of gear! It was crazy. I loved it!

We went on and did as good as we could... it’s hard to play when it’s that cold. The wind kicked up and It cut right through ya. It’s not easy keeping time when you are shaking off a fresh chill.

Anyway we finished up and got the fuck out of there!  There’s heat at home!

1/2/19

It was cold and damp as hell Wednesday night. A day and a half of nonstop rain and it was in the 30s all day, I knew the Sahara would be dead. I didn’t know that all they have for heat is a few space heaters and window units set to heat instead of cool. They don’t really help much when it’s summer and they blow “cold” but I can deal with sweating... I moved to Texas for a reason.  That damp cold made it fucking miserable in there.

Danny did his usual killing it. He was playing through an amp that was a pedal (?!) and a speaker cabinet. Pretty cool setup. Technology touches everything nowadays.

I wore a jacket for most of our set. We played everything too fast and we were sloppy as hell. I think we wanted to get it over and get home and warm. Which we eventually did.

Looking forward to next month when I hope there is a heatwave. Lord.

It was one of those "oh shit kinda" nights...

Bigfoot was on at the Hard Luck playing after The Beautiful Delilahs. It was cold as hell.... Like 38 degrees and it's always outdoor there. And (sigh) And I thought it was at the Lost Well and I dressed for an inside show... So stupid. Life has been on top of me for the past little while so I "put" us in another club where it was warm!!! Wish I'd layered better.

Delilahs were killing it and looking warm, moving up around there on the stage. I know the lights are LED's but the looked toasty. I was even envious because the stage isn't concrete and it would be warmer than where I was standing.

Our set was pretty good considering. I asked that we play a slow one to start off, my hands couldn't deal with the cold! Anyway, we played pretty good and the turnout was decent considering it was 38 degrees outside...

1/6/17

When I pulled up to the Deanville bar and grill it was 22 degrees outside and the wind was blowing at around 20 miles an hour. There were only a few cars in the lot, pretty obvious we weren't gonna set any attendance records. Most people in Central Texas like the heat. Dry, cracked earth and no rain for a month heat. We stay home when it's this cold out.

We were gonna play from 8-11 but we didn't get going until around 8:45. Almost immediately we drove off of the older couples and we were left with a handful. Some of them were actually proud that they braved the elements to see the Hickoids!

By the time we packed up the temperature was 18, and the wind chill was 12. We hadn't been this cold since Berlin. Earlier we'd played a 20+ minute version of "Stop It" and a 20+ minute version of "Truck/Bronto". There was a little bit of phoning it in, but we hit 'em pretty hard for a bunch of old men, slugging out rock and roll for two hours during the coldest night of the winter.

More tomorrow.
