7/21/18

Hickoids were up lthe Other Saturday night. Big show at the Empire Control Room we were  second of four.

Dress up was first. Some pretty raunchy punk with a whole lot of penis out in the room. Lance and I were talking outside and Tom came up to us and said “that guy is just wearing a guitar.”  Lance and I sighed and went inside for a minute.

Tom was right... Penis.

We went on next and the crowd was really in to it. But they weren’t there for us. They came for Piñata Protest!!

Alvaro has really killed it over the years. He is busting his ass for that fine rock and roll music. It’s been cool watching him climb. The current lineup is really tight and on fire! No shocker there.

Cunto finished us off with all of that Cunto sweetness. Those silly ass songs done so seriously... kills me. I’ve said it a hundred times, any band that sings “We fucked a polar bear” will always make me happy.

Bigfoot played a nice little party the other day. The house was way the hell north of Georgetown in a neighborhood that was on a golf course. I was driving Bill and we were getting more and more worried the closer we got.

“They are gonna hate us aren’t they?”

“What are we in for?!”

“Is this some sort of ‘murder a band’ scenario?!!!”

I mean, we were playing in a neighborhood on a golf course. That isn’t the usual Bigfoot thing!!

I rang the doorbell and was greeted by a big, bearded dude covered in tattoos. Right behind him was three pinball machines and two full sized arcade games. We are safe. This is gonna be a lot of fun.

We did two sets and only padded things out a little here and there. You’ve got to when you are (usually) a one set band. But the four of us have been playing together for so long that we have a ton of material. Two sets are relatively easy for us.

After we packed it up, got paid and headed back to Austin. These kinda shows can be a real downer. This one was the exact opposite of that!

Bigfoot and the Beautiful Delilah’s were at the Hard Luck again. We did this show a few months ago when it was winter. That was a rough gig, my hands were frozen and I could barely play. This was pretty much the opposite. Middle of July and we started a half hour after the sun went down. It’s what you want when you moved to Texas because you like heat!

We had a fun set. Trey was all warmed up after his playing with the Delilah’s so we kinda had a leg up. The crowd was a good one. Very receptive to the Bigfoot thing.  No shocker there, a good twenty five percent were friends and the rest of the folks just wanted a good time.  Hard Luck is that way. Not a stuck up poser bar. Just folks wanting no bullshit and a good time.  A good place for Bigfoot.

6/30/18

Nearly a week ago the Hickoids had a show at the Buzzmill down in San Marcos. I got there and Cody was setting up with Chief Fuzzer. They had a short but kick ass set. All three of them really tare it up.

The Smoking Cucarachas went on before them... I found out after I showed up that they were on the bill. Shit.

Next up was Fully Crazed from Canada! We are hooking up with them when we head out in August. They came down to test the waters. Fully enjoyable pile of agro sweatiness. Our time in Canada should be just fine.

Our set was pretty good. Rusty as fuck but we brought it. A skate club had their reunion that night and they went full on.

1 Saw a dude get hit in the head with a glass.
2 Dude in a wheelchair was being spun around the “dance” area in front of the stage in time.
3 A guy did a full face plant on the concrete, came back covered in bandages for the last few songs. He was totally unphased.
4 Right at the end there was a fight and it ended with this gal punching a guy in the head over and over. Not a clue what started it.

After I packed up and headed home. Beaumont’s were playing nearby but I didn’t have it in me at that point. Too much excitement already.

4/22/18

o late...

It was Fredstock again and the Hickoids were playing last. This was the first year the "stock" was a part of Fiesta, the huge, month long party that takes over the middle of San Antonio. Pretty cool deal for SA University. And they deserve it, this is a realy nice party.

Just like last time It was on a decent size stage that was ten feet up and had some seriously rickety stairs. The bass and drums were backlined so Lance and I had it easy with just a couple of trips up and down. But the other dudes...

Our set was ok. Relying on monitors is not a Hickoid strength, but we gave it all we could and the crowd liked it. All that really counts. We'd play this event every year if they asked us (ahem...). It's a nice way to spend a Sunday.

4/5/18

Had a little solo set the other day.

My buddy Ken Jones was hosting a music happy hour at the Austin Poetry festival. He'd put out a call for a non-paying gig and it sounded like the perfect opportunity to get off my ass and work up my solo act. So I did!

I got there and Ken was up doing his thing with a guy on percussion, I was next. They finished and before I started setting up I asked the guy on drums if he wanted to play. He was in so solo set be damned!! I was a duo?...

He was on my shit. Right with me through every style I play. He was hitting a nice groove the whole time. We were up to the tenth song and I threw out "99 Bottles of Beer" so he could do the solos.  He tore that shit up!

After I packed up I shook his hand and thanked him, but it wasn't until I was back home that I realized I didn't remember his name... Kinda lame and beautiful at the same time.

3/31/18

We were in Denton on this Saturday night at Dan's Silver Leaf playing with Slobberbone! Not just playing with them, they opened for us?!?!?! I was texting with Smitty earlier in the day and he said "the opener", not "the opener, Slobberbone" Or "Slobberbone's on first". None of that. I was shocked when they started setting up before us.

The drive up was easy, Easter weekend and most of the traffic was already where it wanted to be. I'd pre-loaded my cabinets in the freak but there was no need for them to make the trip. Bass players share!

They had a pretty kick ass set. The crowd was thick and really in to it. Brian (on Bass) hit both "Sailors Hornpipe" and "Yackety Axe" in the middle of tunes. Fuck! Yes!

Our set was ok. We weren't the tightest even though Smitty wrote up a set list before we went on. That might be the sixth time that's happened in my history with the band.

Anyway, the crowd dug us even though it slowly thinned out through the course of our set. At the end it was a dozen or so hard rocks and the members of Slobberbone staring at us.

I like it up in Denton
