10/26/19

Third night in a row in San Antonio, BUT first there is a party in San Marcos and Bigfoot was playing it.

It was a pretty cool affair. Out on a ranch that had a real stage and food and BEER!!

We were kinda terrible. We aren’t good at playing tunes longer to fill time. It’s a huge flaw in that band and a skill we should learn. Not sure we will...

Then the Harvey band played at Francis Bogside. I’d never been here before but it’s a really cool joint and our set was pretty damn good. Felt nice to have a good one after the earlier one.

10/25/19

Last night was way better/easier than the night before.  The Harvey band (I’m calling it that until we get a name other than the “trio”... there are four of us now!!!) was at The Bang Bang bar. He’s done this Friday before Halloween the last three year’s and I was happy to be a part of it this time.

Beautiful Delilah’s went on two minutes after I got there. They are so damn good with the new bass player. Tighter and stronger in every way. I liked them before but now....  man.

We went up and had a solid set. All of us had costumes on but the finest of the bunch was Andrea. She’s not usually playing with us but since she’s with the last band on the bill she hooked up for a few.

And she wore an inflatable T-Rex costume... holy shit that was funny. Seeing her get on and off stage was amazing, those inflated feet and legs inching up the stairs... But the best was seeing her play!!! It kinda killed me.

Anyway our set was great. We did two new ones and we nailed them pretty hard. I’ve been spending a lot of time at home going over them and it payed off. Yea for homework!

I took off soon after we finished.  There is another San Antonio show tomorrow and... sleep!

10/24/19

Crazy ass night of driving yesterday.  The Harvey band was playing at the Lonesome Rose in San Antonio at 9, a little earlier than usual.  That kinda guarantees a a traffic heavy slog from Austin.  I’ve done it enough times I’m used to that, but this rain came out of nowhere right at the beginning. And it came down hard the whole drive...

Even when I loaded in and out it was a mad dash to avoid getting soaked further. It also got cold as fuck....  joy of joys.

Our set was pretty good. First full set as a four piece and we played pretty good. The sound was a little weird and on occasion there would be some loud distortion coming through the monitors. It actually took me by surprise a couple of times and I screwed up what I was playing.  Weird.

Then on the drive home 35 was closed heading north because there was a lake worth of water on the interstate.  So a usually less than three hour round trip turned in to a white knuckle six hour trudge.

Should be better going back tonight.

10/6/19

Late as hell...

Last day of ACL and it was a double up at Sam’s Town Point. Hicks were first on the bill.  Our set was good. We were all a little out of it playing that early and after the prior couple of days.  Still did pretty good.  And we even hit one of the new ones we recorded in Barcelona, “Nancy”.

Every last one of us fucked up on it at some point. Even Smitty missed the second to last “Nancy” but it felt pretty good playing a new tune publicly.  Been a while.

The trio went up next, BUT!!!! We had a special guest for the last three tunes.  Mr Hollywood, Nashville Steve Vegas!!!  He jumped up to hit the last three.   Bad as hell and we are gonna play with him now. I mean, NOW!!

And that was it for me. Loads of other great bands were on the rest of the day but I was done. Another ACL in the books.

Day 2 Part 1

This was at the Parlor and z Apocalypse was gonna play but they had a scheduling issue (even though Jeremy got up with us for some guitar on Fruit Fly!) Pat and the Outsiders filled in!! It’s been a couple of years since we played more than one show in a row with them. Like I sad yesterday, I’d see them everyday if I could.

We went up and had a really good set. Standing on the floor with folks, not on a stage and eye to eye might be my favorite way to pay. It’s a bad way to do it  when you are sucking but if you are doing things right, even just a little, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.

Part 2

At the Lost Well and things were running a little behind after the earlier show. It’s how it goes...

Sweet Nothin from Albuquerque was first. A bunch of young dudes Tom knows and the two tunes I was able to catch rocked in a really nice way.

It’s Tom’s birthday and his band Monkeyshines got up and had a great set! So good I started questioning his playing in the Hickoids... gonna have to have a long talk with that man someday....

The Swish set was decent. The crowd was in to it and we threw down pretty hard. Fun fun.

The Fishermen and Dinola were the next two. What can I say... go back and read other posts. For both of them.

We missed Pong, Just like we missed Screech of Death at the Parlor earlier. With this many shows it’s hard to hit them all.

And there will be more tomorrow!!

10/4/19

First night of ACL! And we were at the Continental?! Oh shit!! It was a cool night. Hickoids were second of four. Lots of friends. Lots of love.

Zofo was first. It’s Javier and a few badasses from town killing it. So good to see another dimension from Javi. I love that dudes stuff.

Our set was great.  Really nice crowd and they were in to us. And Frontier Dan!!  That’s right. He’s here all weekend and was up for about half of our set, we hit all the high points and it was fun as hell.

But Pat and the Rank Outsiders were next. I didn’t even realize they were playing till I saw the lineup earlier in the week. Fuck yeah.

Guess what? They fucking killed it. I think I could watch them every night and not get bored. They make me so happy.

The Sloths were last but we took off before they went on. Too whipped and too much coming to run myself in to the ground this early on.

8/30/19

Two days ago Bigfoot played a party for this fella named Yoshi. His restaurant won some awards and the South Congress Hotel (where it is located) was throwing him a party to celebrate. He wanted Walter to play and that meant Bigfoot!

It was kind of an odd event to start with, they don’t usually have bands and I don’t think they knew what to do with us. But everyone was kind, helpful and ready to make the party work. It ended up being a pretty cool night.

Our set was solid. No real PA we just sang through an amp. Not the best but survivable. At some point some folks, Yoshi included, were up and dancing! All of this took place in the lobby bar of a fancy, new hotel on South Congress. Loads of potential for duchey-ness but there was none of that. A very pleasant surprise.
